Clinical Supervision
Clinical supervision is crucial for practitioners engaged in clinical practice. DAPAANZ, along with many other professional associations, advises that supervision needs to be provided at a minimum of every four weeks, and more frequently for new or inexperienced practitioners, or if the work is complex.
It is important that supervision is provided by a more experienced professional who has at least equal experience in the field, who has also been professional trained in supervision. Supervision is about supporting, guiding and providing feedback and reflection to the practitioner. It is not about personal development or therapy for the practitioners, but offers an opportunity to discuss casework and other professional issues in a structured way. This is often known as clinical or counselling supervision or consultation. The purpose is to assist the practitioner to learn from his or her experience and progress in expertise, as well as to ensure good service to the client or patient.
Supervision is used in counselling, psychotherapy, and other mental health disciplines, as well as businesses, community groups and professions engaged in a profession of working with people.
